June Primary Elections In Santa Clarita: Your Ballot At A Glance

The June Primary Election is fast-approaching, with a number of candidates are running for important offices.

Sample BallotSanta Clarita residents will vote in the Statewide Primary Election in less than a week, for State Governor, U.S. Representative, State Assemblymen for the 36th and 38th Districts and County Sheriff, among other offices.

The primary election is on Tuesday, June 3, and candidates have already been campaigning for months, including several forums aired on KHTS AM-1220 and SCVTV.

On the ballot for state governor are six Republicans, two Democrats, one each from the Green and Peace and Freedom parties and five with no party preference.

Incumbent Jerry Brown is running for what would be his fourth term in office.

Among the other incumbents running to keep their current seats are Attorney General Kamala Harris, Board of Equalization Member George Runner and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

Running for the 36th State Assembly District are two Democrats–incumbent Steve Fox and political consultant Kermit Franklin–and three Republicans–CHP officer Tom Lackey, education advocate Suzette Martinez and J.D. Kennedy, a property management consultant.

36th Assembly District

The 36th District encompasses Lancaster, Palmdale and the northern corner of the Santa Clarita Valley, including some of Saugus and Canyon Country.

The 38th District includes the majority of the SCV, Castaic and Simi Valley.

Incumbent Scott Wilk, a Republican, is running against Democrat Jorge Fuentes.

At the national level, eight candidates are running for the seat that Congressman Buck McKeon will leave vacant when he retires at the end of the term.

Candidates Tony Strickland and Steve Knight, both Republicans, and Lee Rodgers, a Democrat participated in a forum presented by KHTS, SCVTV, The Signal and College of the Canyons’ Cougar News.

Late-comer to the race and local tax adviser Troy Castagna is also running for the Republican nomination.

The county assessor and sheriff are up for election at the county level.

Following Sheriff Lee Baca’s retirement in January, Orange County Undersheriff John Scott was named Interim Sheriff for the L.A. County Department.

38th Assembly District

Seven candidates are running to replace him: Bob Olmstead, Jim McDonnell, Lou Vince, Paul Tanaka, James Hellmold, Patrick Gomez and Todd Rogers.

Also on the ballot are two state measures, addressing veteran housing and local government transparency.

The Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014 would authorize “$600 in general obligation bonds for affordable multi-family supportive housing to relieve homelessness, affordable transitional housing, affordable rental housing, or related facilities for veterans and their families,” according to the sample ballot.

The Public Records. Open Meetings. State Reimbursement to Local Agencies. Legislative Constitutional Amendment “requires local government compliance with laws providing public access to local government body meetings and records of government officials.”
