The Newhall American Legion Post is planning its annual Sergeant Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship fundraiser dinner for April 25, 2013. This year’s keynote speaker will be Dennis Kuewa, the Los Angeles Regional VA Director. The focus of his keynote address will be the many VA programs available to assist businesses that want to hire veterans.
The scholarship fund honors the memory of Sgt. Gelig, an Army paratrooper from Stevenson Ranch who died in Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010 when his vehicle was attacked with a roadside bomb. Gelig enlisted in the Army in 2006 after graduating from William S. Hart High School in Newhall.

To help veterans return to the workforce with the training and skills they’ll need to succeed, the Newhall American Legion partners with the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce to provide local veterans with a $2000 scholarship.
Toward that end, the Legion holds the annual fundraising dinner. Single seats cost $20 apiece, and Table sponsorships, which provide 8 seats and inclusion in the program and advertisements, are priced at $300.
The Legion also accepts individual donations to the Sergeant Ian Gelig Scholarship. One hundred percent of the money raised from all sponsorships, seat purchases and private donations go directly towards assisting Santa Clarita veterans to attend college courses.
