The decorating is expected to start at 6 p.m.

The tree will be decorated with stars, as well as white angels, which all have special significance, said Sharon Ventrice, who’s helping to organize the event.

“We decorate it with blue and red stars and white angels — the gold stars are troops that we have lost who have died in service of our country,” she said. “We have 11 gold star families who have relatives who have lost their lives since 9/11.”

There are also blue stars for anyone who is serving in the military, which are adorned on a tree provided by the city, Ventrice said.

Ventrice works with Prayer Angels for the Military and the Veterans Memorial Committee of the Santa Clarita Valley.

“If a family wants to contact us and send us a  picture, we will honor their relative,” said Ventrice, whose husband served in Vietnam.

There will be local volunteers entertaining, and as the tree is being lit, Marilyn Hackett singing “I’ll be Home for Christmas.”

Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce President Fred Arnold will be the emcee, and Chuck Morris, who helped organize the Travelling Vietnam Wall Memorial effort.

If there’s interest in having a family member honored on the military tree, please contract Prayer Angels at Prayerangelsforthemilitary@yahoo.com.

Through Prayer Angels, Ventrice also helps organize care packages for the troops throughout the year with community donations, and the Prayer Angels still are seeking donations for these packages.Care package items for Prayer Angels for the Military
