Metro Announces New Fare Structure For Buses, Rail Lines

A new fare structure for all Metro buses and rail lines is set to take effect on September 15, Metro officials announced Wednesday.

All fares can be pre-paid using what Metro officials are calling a TAP card and then “tapping” each time a rider boards, according to their website.Metro Announces New Fare Structure For Buses, Rail Lines

Bus riders can also pay for a single ride with a token or cash using exact change.

“We know our customers depend on us to get to work, school, medical appointments and leisure activities as efficiently as possible,” said Arthur T. Leahy, Metro’s CEO, in an email statement. “That’s why a key feature of the new structure allows our customers who use a TAP card to pay a single fare and transfer for up to two hours at no additional charge to other Metro lines to complete their one-way trip. We think this feature will be a money-saver for many riders.”

The free transfers, which have not been offered in the past, are being introduced as a result of customer feedback requesting the inclusion of transfers.

“As Metro’s network expands, flexibility to transfer without paying another full fare will make it easier for customers to connect and fully use the growing Metro system,” read a statement on the Metro website.

Residents interested in travelling using TAP cards can purchase one for $1 at TAP Vending Machines and onboard buses or for $2 at pass sales locations.

Details of the new fare structure can be found on Metro’s website.
