Congressman Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, is still seeking submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition, which will be judged locally at Fast Frame in Valencia.

“It just provides an opportunity for everybody, and it gives us, as local store owners, the ability to participate in the community. We’ve hosted it for a number of years now,” said Randy Burzynski, who is co-owner of Fast Frame with his wife, Rose-Marie.

McKeon said he enjoys taking in the work as he strolls the halls of the Capitol, where the winning work is displayed. 

The idea for a local competition came out of a conversation between McKeon and KHTS co-owner Carl Goldman, whose oldest son, Ryan, was a student at Valencia High at the time. 

During a trip through the Capitol, Goldman noticed there was art from students across the country, but none of it came from Santa Clarita Valley students, and he wanted to know how that could be remedied.

“I’ve been amazed by the remarkable talent that I have seen from our local students over the years for this competition,” McKeon said. “The winning submission is put on display in our Capitol tunnel for all to see when they come to visit and I always enjoy seeing the artwork displayed as I walk to the Capitol. I am looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.”

High school students who are residents of the California 25th District are encouraged to enter and share their creativity with the local community.

Burzynski said the competition also is a great opportunity to look at artwork and creativity from students as far as away as the Antelope Valley and local Hart district students, as well.  

“One thing stands out, that the kids have the creativity and the imagination that they have, and then they have the ability to execute in the medium that they’re working on,” he said.

He added that he also enjoys displaying the nominees on two walls that he clears space for to put up some of the more imaginative student entries.

The Valencia Fast Frame location at 25850 McBean Parkway is where the judging will take place, which is in the shopping center near the Whole Foods Market.
