Local Entrepreneur Establishes Custom-Tailored Suits Venture From Ground Up
Hart High School graduate Jeff Settle founded his Los Angeles-based fashion startup company Tailored Republic, which provides an affordable alternative to purchasing high-quality custom- tailored suits and menswear, in April 2012 at the age of 24.

He said the idea for this venture came to him on a motorcycle trip across the coast of Vietnam.
“In Hội An, Vietnam, there’s nothing but a square mile of tailor shops,” Settle said. “I was sitting out for breakfast one day, and I thought, ‘You know I should get a tailored suit here because it’s lower in price than in the United States.’ Then the idea hit me.”
“I could start a company that offers custom-tailored suits at a lower price point than they currently do in the United States,” he said. “Then it all started coming together. Before I knew it, I started writing a business plan from there. I had some good amount of experience in entrepreneurship.”
The Santa Clarita native, with a strong background in finance, engineered his own business model and began operating his business primarily via the web and in-person in the United States. It is the first venture he has ever created from the ground up.
“When you’re building an e-commerce brand for the first time, you learn how to build a team and handle suppliers,” Settle said. “From the full spectrum of running a business, it’s a complete crash course. However when I made mistakes in the business, I didn’t let it get to me. My goal is not to be perfect and never make mistakes. I just want to build upon them and learn from them.”
Tailored Republic caters to men of any size, ages 21 to 44 in the corporate marketplace.
“We offer suits that fit, meaning we suit short, tall,” Settle said. “We can make a suit that fits anyone... Most men aren’t satisfied with the way their suits fit at department stores, so my services help fix that.”
Settle’s business offers a variety of ways to measure the perfect custom suit through online tutorials, a full measurement wizard, a phone operator assisting with the measurement process and a measurement guide for a local tailor to take professional measurements that will be fully compensated by Tailored Republic.
“Other businesses make custom suits, but no one does it for the low price point we offer, nor does anyone do it with the customizing capability we have over the web,” Settle said.
