“This is a huge swimming safety expo presented by multiple partners including the LA County Fire Department, the City of Santa Clarita, and Santa Clarita Lifeguards,” Battalion Chief Mark Savage of the LACOFD said. ”It’s a partnership to bring awareness of the risks of drowning in any amount of water.”

The event, which was held from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, had several booths set up in the main engine room of the fire station. Lifeguards from the City of Santa Clarita were in attendance along with Academy Swim Club, Thomas Pools & Safety Fencing, Superior Life Support, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and more.

The event comes two months after the drowning death of Travis Stratton, a 4-year-old autistic boy who drowned in a Castaic pool after escaping from his home.

“Today is a perfect opportunity to emphasize the risk of water and how a child can drown silently, within minutes,” Savage said. “Its an opportunity for awareness about what parents can do to make their houses and pools more safe and a place for parents and kids to learn CPR.  Better educating parents and children will minimize the risk of swimming and drowning incidents.”

The event included several activities and displays for participants including a water balloon toss, a drowning demonstration, a helicopter on display and two fire engines.

The event was free to all attendees and was the fourth annual Water Safety Expo held in Santa Clarita.
