The recent release of their new album “Cinema” is substantial and inimitable in content and transcends boundaries of what modern rock conventionally sounds like.

“Cinema” is a compelling concept album that explores the complex thematic dichotomies of cynicism and innocence by juxtaposing the discrepancy in perspectives of a child and father. It’s a refreshing steer away from conventional album topics like relationships and heartbreak.

The first three “light” tracks on the album “Cinema” are written through the narrative of a younger son, which is representative of an idealistic and whimsical viewpoint. The remaining “dark” tracks on “Cinema” are from the point of view of a father who is cynical in attitude based on his life experiences.

As the album progresses and the narrative transitions from the child’s lighthearted perspective to the adult’s darker point of view, it is easy to infer from the album’s message that when reaching a coming of age, cynicism tends to impinge on one’s conscious and subtly erodes and replaces the idealism that was once present.

The opening lines from the song “Five,” a standout of the album, which is told from the father’s angle shows the hardened cynicism of the father: “Remember when I told you son / ‘Chase down all your dreams’/ I think its time I told you son / That it’s all fantasy.”

“The lighter more upbeat songs are supposed to be from the child’s whimsical perspective and his life growing up and the heavier songs set the tone for the father’s perspective which is just a dark version of the same story. There’s a very clear progression, ” said Cody Jonsen, lead singer.

“Cinema” features infectious riffs and well-timed licks that build up the emotion of the songs. Jonsen’s voice is haunting and compelling and evokes a stirring emotional response which is complimentary to the hard hitting tone of the entire album. The buildups in tempos are well-timed showcase their prime musicianship.

Currently, The Royal sound is working on a recording a new album which will feature 11 tracks and will be a continuation of the concept from “Cinema.”

“This next album is going to be about the child’s life after the father left him. We’re pretty excited about it, ” according to Jonsen’s statement.

Their next upcoming show is at The Vu Ultra Bar on July 12.
