Officials said the driver of a white SUV who fled the scene traveling southbound on I-5 is believed to be responsible for the collision.

The identity of the driver is not known at this time.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Elvia Arellano Rodarte, 39, Wasco, was driving her 2003 GMC Yukon southbound in the fast lane at approximately 75 mph when a white SUV in the adjacent lane made an unsafe lane change directly into her path.

Arellano-Rodarte tried to brake and swerved to the left to avoid a collision, according to the CHP report.

She subsequently lost control of her vehicle and collided with the guardrail dividing the northbound and southbound lanes. Her vehicle turned over several times.

Two passengers without seatbelts were ejected onto the roadway and sustained major injuries. The additional injured parties were treated on scene and sent to local hospitals via airlift and ground transport.

Arellano-Rodarte was sent to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial with minor injuries.

The additional passengers in Arellano-Rodarte’s vehicle were:

Valerie Briceno, 24, Wasco, who was sent to UCLA Medical Center with major injuries; Anthony Arellano, 3, Wasco, who was sent to UCLA Medical Center with major injuries; Fernando Arellano, 9, Wasco, who was sent to UCLA Medical Center with major injuries; Vivian Arellano, 22, Wasco, who was sent to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial with minor injuries; Irene Escobedo, 5, Wasco, who was sent to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial with minor injuries, and Briana Arellano, 17, Wasco, was sent to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial with major injuries.

CHP Investigators will be following up on the details of the collision, as well as contacting additional witnesses in attempt to identify the driver in a white SUV.

This investigation is ongoing.
