According to the CHP, the collision occurred around 4 a.m. Tuesday when the 2001 Freightliner drifted into the a right shoulder where the driver of a 1996 Honda Civic had stopped to change a flat tire. The impact caused both vehicles to turn on their sides.

The driver of the Honda sustained major life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the big rig was moderately injured. Alcohol is not believed to have played a part in the accident.

Original Story:

A big rig carrying over 39,000 pounds of meat overturned on its side after colliding with another vehicle on Highway 14 just south of Sand Canyon at approximately 4:10AM this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both vehicles suffered significant damage, and emergency crews were called to treat injuries at the scene.

The collision blocked the number 2 and number 3 lanes, causing the CHP issued a SigALERT at 4:30AM until further notice.

Southbound commuters coming from Acton, Agua Dulce or the Antelope Valley are advised to take alternate routes to avoid the traffic delays. Traffic is currently backed up to Agua Dulce Canyon Road.
