Help Typhoon Haiyan Survivors Through The Fil-Am Association Of SCV

Typhoon Haiyan has affected millions in the Philippines, killing thousands and leaving many more without access to food, water, shelter or medical care.

Typhoon HaiyanThe local Filipino Association of Santa Clarita Valley is mobilizing several efforts to collect money and donated goods for the victims of the typhoon.

There are many ways the community can get involved through the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014.

Until Monday, Nov. 25 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Lyons Avenue is accepting in-kind donations on behalf of the Fil-Am Association.

They are looking for the following basic necessities, both used and new:

  • Clothing
  • Blankets
  • Medical supplies, such as aspirin and tylenol
  • Household supplies
  • Soap
  • Shampoos
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Slippers
  • Canned goods

Tacloban CityMyra Miranda, spokeswoman for the Fil-Am Association, said that these donations will go directly to the people who need them, not through a third party.

“It will take a long time to rebuild that city…” she said. “(The goal is to) feed them and clothe them so they can rebuild their city.”

On Saturday, Dec. 7 NorthPark Community Church will host a Christmas/70s Disco concert to raise money for Gawad Kalinga, a Philippines-based nonprofit. In English “Gawad Kalinga” means “to give care.” The money will go towards rebuilding homes and villages in the affected areas.

The FilAm Association partners with the United States chapter of Gawad Kalinga.

The concert begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children 5-14 and free for children 4 and under.

Miranda also asked that the community stay tuned for next year’s efforts to help the Philippines and victims rebuild.

The FilAm Association is planning an expo, but details have not been finalized.

They are also accepting monetary donations.

Checks can be made out to “Fil-Am Association of Santa Clarita Valley” and mailed to P.O. Box 801753, Santa Clarita, CA 91380.

“Big or small, $1, $2, $5–we really appreciate any donation they can give,” Miranda said, “because a dollar goes a long way in the Philippines.”
