An echocardiogram uses standard ultrasound techniques to create a moving picture of the heart, measuring the size and shape of the heart, in addition to chamber and valve function.
Through echocardiography, life-threatening heart conditions can be detected early.
A successful echocardiogram also depends on the skill of the sonographer, the quality of equipment and the knowledge of the interpreting physician, all of which come together to create a comprehensive picture of a patient’s heart.
“I see this accreditation as further evidence of our commitment to quality and the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease,” said Jean Marie Stewart, director of Cardiovascular Services. “I’m proud of the focus and commitment of the staff and physicians on the team, and I am grateful for the support of administration for making it possible for us to continue creating the most comprehensive adult cardiovascular program.”
Preparing to apply for the accreditation was a yearlong process, said Mimi Kim, technical director of echocardiography lab.
The department increased staff review, standardized reports and monitored their efficiency, among other things.
It is rare for a hospital to be approved after their first application, Kim said, but Henry Mayo did so.
It’s a voluntary process, but in addition to providing an added level of quality assurance, the accreditation makes the hospital more accessible to Medicare patients.
“Medicare is starting to require this (accreditation) certain states,” Kim said.
The hospital plans to maintain the accreditation in the future, according to Kim.
“Accreditation by ICAEL is not a one-time event.” she said. “Maintaining quality in the echocardiography lab is an ongoing process. We at Henry Mayo are committed to providing the best in diagnostic imaging services to our patients by maintaining compliance to the quality assurance measures set for…lab accreditation.”
