Company officials reported they’re proud to have accomplished their goal of changing Santa Clarita “one smile at a time.”

“While this accomplishment is bittersweet, the Board of Directors is overjoyed to see the next generation of Santa Clarita children with healthier and brighter smiles,” said Brendie Heter, vice president of Foundation for Children’s Dental Health. “It took 21 years, but with the support of our community and local businesses, we did it.”

The organization was started in 1993 by a group of Santa Clarita residents, including Ken Pulskamp, Mary Caravalhoand Steve Schmidt, with the intent of creating healthier children with easier access to dental care.

The foundation created Santa Clarita’s first program to ever offer free dental services to low-income families who often lack access to even basic dental  healthcare.

In its years of service to the community, the Foundation for Children’s Dental Health offered dental education, preschool fluoride treatments and health screenings.

As a result, the organization reports they have witnessed a gradual decline in pediatric dental decay.

The foundation hosted a celebration dinner June 14 highlighting the organization’s accomplishments over the years as well as recognizing supporters, sponsors and volunteers.

The event was held at the home of councilmember Bob Kellar and his wife, Kathy Kellar, who have supported the success of the organization through raising awareness for dental health and hosting annual fundraisers.

Since its creation, the foundation has served over 85,000 Santa Clarita children and has consistently increased assistance to meet the demands of the community.
