Hart Wins Valley Invitational League Baseball Championship, 8-4, Over Saugus

Hart beat Saugus, 8-4, to win the Valley Invitational Baseball League championship at Birmingham High.

The Indians scored four runs in the fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie.

Nick Valaika doubled and drove in a run in the fourth inning for Hart. He added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Hart ended the summer baseball league with a 10-game winning streak.

In golf, Hart High graduate Johnny MacArthur and West Ranch graduate Joey Downey tied for seventh place in the sectional qualifier for the US Amateur Championship at the TPC Valencia.

MacArthur and Downey each shot 2-over in the 36-hole qualifier. The top three golfers, Matt Williams, Blake Meek and Aaron Wise, qualified for the US Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Massachusetts in August.

Valencia High graduate Max Homa automatically qualified for the US Amateur Championship. He is No. 10 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The top 50 amateur golfers earned automatic bids.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the visiting New York Yankees, 3-2. Mark Ellis drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Dodgers increased their lead in the National League West standings to 3 ½ games over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers and Yankees continue their series tonight. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against former Dodger Hiroki Kuroda for the Yankees.
