Chris Fall announced Wednesday his intention to not seek a second term on the governing board of the William S. Hart Union High School District.

It was a move he made with “a heavy heart,” he said, before the board meeting in which he announced his intention to the district.

It was a move that Fall said he had to make in the best interest of his family.

Fall had resigned from the board with a letter Aug. 16, after discovering a potential conflict of interest that would have arisen had he continued to stay on the governing board.

However, district officials discovered that, technically, Fall was already named to a second term by officials with the Los Angeles County Clerk’s Registrar Recorder’s Office, because he was slated to run opposed for a second term in November.

With no opposition to run against him, Fall automatically received the nod.

Hart district officials have already created a timeline by which they will seek a replacement for Fall, which was announced at the last meeting.

Fall earned the nomination after a five-hour interview process with 11 other candidates who filled the seat of Paul Strickland, who resigned in May.

Fall, who works as a consultant for Republic, a waste-disposal company, resigned after Consolidated Services, a subsidiary of Republic, had a vote before the board on a contract extension.

Republic earned the contract with the lowest bid when it came up for renewal, which meant that Fall couldn’t have been on the board if any changes to the contract were made, or the contract came up for an extension.

However, Fall is also president of LED, a lighting company, which has sold lighting equipment to the district.

Fall was told by his attorney that if a company such as his didn’t have at least five years of prior history with the district, future work could have also represented a conflict.

“Because I can’t guarantee that a similar, potential conflict could not arise in the near future, I must step aside and allow someone else the opportunity to serve the district. It is this reason, and this reason alone that I have made this decision,” Fall said at the meeting.

Fall started LED in 2010.

A discussion of the vacancy will take place Sept. 25, with a news release posted Sept. 26.

Officials are expected to announce a deadline of Oct. 8 for vacancy applications and, after the submissions are checked for the legal requirements, three days later the applicants will be advised of their interview times for Oct. 16.

A board vote will be taken after the interviews, and an oath of office will be administered Dec. 11 to board President Joe Messina and Bob Jensen, who are running unopposed, as well as the nominee selected by the board.
