Fire Station 107Meant to be a day to “serve those who serve us,” according to the website, teams split up into three groups for the event.

At Fire Station 107, volunteers from Home Depot and local residents built and planted raised gardens, painted picnic tables and refinished a wooden chopping table.

Home Depot furnished the station with new patio furniture and a barbeque.

Teams at the Sheriff’s Station assembled bunk beds and repainted the bunk room and kitchen.

Fire Station 107At the Old Town Newhall Library, one of the community rooms was set aside where volunteers, young and old, assembled care packages for active military, writing notes of encouragement and thanks on the outside of the boxes. They also put together supply bags for the Fire and Sheriff’s Stations.

HandsOn will also hold a commemorative ceremony Wednesday evening at the Westfield Valencia mall in honor of those who fell on Sept. 11 and those first-responders who serve the local community every day. From 5 to 7 p.m., families can interact with fire trucks and military vehicles and enjoy food vendors. The ceremony will start at 7 p.m., featuring several speakers, including Mayor Bob Kellar.

Sheriff's StationHandsOn Executive Director Seema Shah said that they hope the event raises awareness for Sept. 11, especially for children who may not remember or know about it.

HandsOn Santa Clarita is a non-profit network that connects organizations across the valley and surrounding area.

It was founded 15 years ago, in part by city staff, who saw the need for a central volunteer hub, Shah said.
