Habitat For Humanity Partners With Home Depot To Build Homes For SCV Veterans

Early construction of six homes being built for Santa Clarita Valley veterans and their families is set to begin Tuesday, officials announced.

Team Depot, the Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer team, is partnering with Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley to build the homes as part of an 87-home veteran community near Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita, according to a Habitat news release.Habitat For Humanity Partners With Home Depot To Build Homes For SCV Veterans

“The program is part of Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley’s Enriched Neighborhood model,” said Sarah Steffen, a Habitat spokeswoman. “It gives them the chance to own a home, which gives them economic advantages… We give them skills and information so that they can also excel and become successful homeowners in Santa Clarita.”

Approximately 120 Team Depot volunteers will build frames, work on underground plumbing and establish foundations for the homes throughout the day.

One future home recipient, veteran and mother of seven, Veronica Lemus, plans to help volunteers with construction efforts.

The homes are expected to be completed in early 2015, Steffen said.

Habitat officials created the 87-home Enriched Neighborhood in Santa Clarita in collaboration with the California Department of Veterans Affairs to provide safe housing for low-income Santa Clarita Valley veterans.

To date, they have built 271 homes in both valleys, and are in the top five percent of Habitat affiliates nationwide to reach the goal of building more than 100 homes.

Tuesday’s build is part of the Home Depot’s fourth annual Celebration of Service, when Team Depot groups across the nation plan to transform 500 veteran homes and facilities in a single day, according to the news release.

This year’s Celebration of Service, in partnership with hundreds of nonprofit organizations, is set to transform more than 1,000 homes for veterans nationwide from September 11 through Veterans Day.
