Golden Valley Football Coach Steps Away From Sideline, Will Remain co-AD

Robert Fisher, Golden Valley High School’s co-athletic director, announced he’s stepping down as football coach, but plans to continue AD and teaching duties.

Fisher made the announcement Monday night to players and staff, and then made the information public Tuesday.

“This is a change that needs to occur,” Fisher said. “It’s the next step in the building of the program.”

Fisher took over the football program three years ago, after the previous head coach, Andy Campbell, left the team in August, right before the season.

Fisher had been a coach on staff for five years with the football program, and at that time, felt that assuming the head coaching role was the best way he could help.

The timing of the departure was difficult on the program, he said.

“I met with everyone and really felt like I wanted to step up for them and get the program back where it needed to be,” Fisher said.

While the quality of students and athletes in the program has continued to improve, there has still been a struggle for the team in terms of achieving success by traditional measures, he said.

“The lack of winning, to a certain extent, has made me realize that a change is needed,” he said. “With the program being at a place that I feel is an improvement, it’d be something where someone can step and change things a little bit and be successful.”

The school’s Principal, Sal Frias, commended the job Fisher has done and said he supported him and his decision.

“If he wanted to be my coach, he’d still be my coach,” Frias said. “He runs the program the right way, and the next head coach is going to benefit a lot from the work that he’s done.”
