Glider Crash Lands Southwest Of Wrightwood Saturday Morning

After releasing from its tow, a glider aircraft made an emergency landing Saturday morning.

A glider aircraft made an emergency crash landing in the mountains of the Angeles National Forest at 10:55 Saturday morning southwest of Wrightwood, according to a press release from the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

Glider crash lands in the Angeles National Forest Saturday Morning Deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff’s station responded to the crash and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau and Special Enforcement Bureau, Air Rescue 5 Helicopter and its crew from the Emergency Services Detail were called in to help with the situation, according to the release.

The pilot, a 57-year-old male from Alhambra, and his passenger, a 53 year-old male from Beverly Hills, received only minor injuries and were safely airlifted to a local hospital following the crash, according to the release.

The crash occurred sometime after the pilot disconnected from the powered aircraft that had towed him from Crystal Airport in Llano, according to the release. The pilot was unable to maintain altitude, necessitating the emergency landing.  

The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau are investigating the exact cause of the crash, according to the release.
