Learn How to Migrate Your Old Website Safely, Without Losing Your Great Page Rankings
Santa Clarita SEO specialist Chaz Key reveals the best, safest way to migrate or update your old website using 301 redirects in his next free “SEO So Easy!” workshop for Santa Clarita small business owners on Tuesday, May 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“301 Redirects and Site Migration” is Key’s fifth free “SEO So Easy!” workshop this year, following sessions on basic search engine optimization on a page, keyword research, internal link structure, and link-building from other sites back to yours.
How to Avoid the No. 1 Site Migration Mistake
“Tuesday night, I’m going to show the class how to avoid what happens 95 percent of the time when an updated website is launched,” Key said. “The pages that you worked so hard on for so many years just drop off the search engines. They lose their rank. That can be devastating to a business of any size.”
Key said failing to properly plan a site migration is the No. 1 mistake a website owner makes when creating a new site.
“All the credibility your old website had is virtually squashed when you launch a brand new website. All the old links, all those articles linking to the old site, all the directories, RSS feeds, any type of link — that website no longer gets the page-ranking credit it used to have, unless you create 301 redirects,” he said.
Why Use a 301 Redirect?
“The major search engines — Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com — all understand that when you say a 301 redirect, you’re saying this page, this website, has moved permanently, and here’s where to find it now,” Key said. “When you do not migrate your site correctly, you will lose a significant amount of traffic, both from search engines and from users clicking on links trying to get to your website. If they get a 404 ‘Page Not Found” error page, they’ll figure you’re out of business — or should be — and never return to your site. I will show everyone how to use 301 redirects to avoid that.”
