Founder and CEO Elmarie Hyman will be discussing the common reasons that people choose to homeschool and the options available to parents, such as hybrid schooling, charter schools and parent co-ops.
Hyman, who also teaches at Learn Beyond the Book, has homeschooled her own children for many years and said that her oldest just graduated from high school.
“It helps with individualizing their learning, so they have a good idea what they want to do when they’re done with school,” she said.
Hyman said she will also talk about common obstacles that parents might face if they choose to homeschool, including pressure from family and friends and worry that their children do not get enough social interaction outside the home.
“I had to get over the fact that people around me are judging what I’m doing,” she said.
Learn Beyond the Book offers a number of classes for homeschooled students, covering those subjects parents might not feel comfortable teaching on their own, and to give children a chance to experience a classroom setting.
Classes include basics like literature, algebra and economics, and extracurricular activities like robotics, ceramics and theater.
