Firefighters worked overnight to “get and handle” on a 170-acre wildfire that began on a hillside in the Ventura County community of Fillmore and burned two homes amid strong wind gusts.

The fire started before 5 p.m. near 1280 Goodenough Road and prompted a 400-firefighter response that continued overnight. Fire officials scheduled a news conference to provide updates Tuesday at 6 a.m.

Calm winds and temperatures in the 50s were reported early Tuesday in Fillmore.

“We’ve had a good night,” said Capt. Mike Lindbery, of the Ventura County Fire Department. “It has given us a chance to get in there and get a handle on this thing.

“It burned with high intensity and a lot of energy. We had a few things work for us, and we were able to reduce the losses.”

Containment was at 80 percent early Tuesday.

Part of what Lindbery described as “a very large house” was saved after firefighters entered the burning structure. He estimated that about 50 percent of the home burned.

“We had some firefighters get in there and make a very aggressive interior attack,” said Lindberg.

The fire threatened about 100 homes Monday evening and prompted evacuations. The order was lifted early Tuesday morning.

“A couple years back we had some pretty bad fires, but nothing that came close to homes like this,” said Fillmore Mayor Pro Tem Manuel Minjares. “This is pretty significant.”

More than 100 firefighters are at the scene of a brush fire in Fillmore, said Lori Ross press information officer for the Ventura County Fire Department.

“Right now, we’re at approximately 60 acres. There’s a long list of evacuations,” Ross said. “They don’t have a number for containment.”

The fire is moving eastbound toward Pole Creek, and away from Los Angeles County, Ross said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials sent two strike teams to assist in the effort, according to county officials.

The fire was started at a mobile home park at the 1400 block of Goodenough Road in Fillmore, Ross said.

There is no number for the percentage of containment as of 8:25 p.m. Approximately 100 structures are considered threatened — all homes — and two have burned, she said.

The initial call, which is being handled by the Ventura County Fire Department, came in at 4:44 p.m.

“The wind took the fire from the mobile home,” Ross said.

Local residents are being evacuated to Fillmore Veterans Memorial Building at 511 Second St. in Fillmore, she said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials also dispatched two strike teams, according to fire officials.

The fire has not approached L.A. County yet,
