Kim Goldman, executive director of the Santa Clarita Youth Project, and Soraya Avalos, from the Santa Clarita Valley Child and Family Center, stopped by the KHTS studio to talk to radio DJ T.Katz.

The three discussed the “SCV Purge” on Twitter, in which nude pictures of underage Santa Clarita teens were posted on the social media platform.

Avalos encouraged parents to “engage” with their children whenever possible. She stressed the importance of dialogue between parents and their children. “Whether is be driving them to school, or shopping for clothes or groceries, you have to engage them,” Avalos said.

While some parents are nervous about taking on a leadership role, Avalos said parents need to feel empowered enough to set limits.

“If you see a particular image, why don’t you use that to start a conversation and say, ‘What do you think are the consequences from having that image?’” Avalos said. “‘What image do you want to portray?’”

Goldman advised parents to sit down with their children after “an error in judgement,” and she stresses the importance of teens “believing in themselves.”

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputy Josh Dubin sat down at KHTS for the bi-weekly “Neighborhood Watch” show to give some helpful  back to school tips for parents.

“Parents really need to be proactive about this,” said Commander Mike Parker of the Sheriff’s Department. He says the first thing to do, “is to learn about what social media your child is using.”

Dubin also spoke about some recent threats to a local high school on an Instagram account at a LASD press conference.

“Now is a great time to have an open dialogue with your students about the powers of social media, the world wide reach of social media, and how law enforcement,  parents, students and community residents all take posts,” Dubin said. “Whether or not you intended them  to be true or not, take these posts very very seriously.”

Parker also offered some back-to-school hints and advice on how to talk to your child about “stranger danger,” such as: “Don’t write your child’s name on their clothing or their backpack because that would enable a stranger to make it seem like they know the child.”
