SCV Buzz - Family Fun Activities In Santa Clarita - August 27, 2014

Category:

The Labor Day Weekend is upon us, and even though the thought of staying in, watching movie marathons, and burying your face in a bag of something that hasn’t got any natural ingredients whatsoever sounds perfect, you might want to aim a little higher.

Here are my top 5 Santa Clarita family fun activities for this Labor Day weekend:

Santa Clarita Concerts in the ParkConcerts In The Park With Poncho Sanchez - August 16, 2014

A great tragedy has befallen our youth…they don’t know how to do “the Hustle”, who Deney Terrio is, or why being a guest star on “The Love Boat” was such a big deal. We may not be able to restore that knowledge to all, but we can introduce that funky disco groove back to our family at this week’s Concert in the Park: Boogie Knights. It’s the final show of the season happening on Saturday, August 30th, at 7pm at Central Park. As always, bring your picnic dinner, chairs, and blankets. Bell-bottoms are not required, but suggested.

Be The Light 5k Run/Walk

There is no doubt about it, running is hard. And hateful. And it involves exercise in clothes that are too small and colorful for normal human display. BUT…your kids love it AND…it’s good for you. So, why not put on those shiny pants and bright colored shoes and participate in the Be the Light 5K Run/Walk!

Your 12-18 year olds can participate for only $15 on Saturday, August 30th at 8pm, and they will have a great time exploring the West Creek Park’s loop at night. It’s a “Be the Light” theme so bring a headlamp or compact flashlight, and make sure to register ASAP. Think about it, something you and your teenager can do together…who knows, they might even TALK to you!

Youth Sports Jethawks Day

The City of Santa Clarita and the Lancaster JetHawks are holding “Youth Sports JetHawks Day” on Saturday, August 30th, and if your kids are into baseball you are going to want to take them to this super fun event.

Youth Sports Jethawks DayYou can get tickets for just $8, and for $13 you can get a sleepover as well. A sleepover? At the stadium? Seriously, that’s about as incredible of an idea as putting peanut butter on …everything! Call 250-3756 for details or check online.

Friday August 29th is the last day to get them, so make your reservations now.

Six Flags Magic Mountain

When my kids begged me to go to Six Flags Magic Mountain, my first instinct was to say that, at 5 and 8 years old, they were too young. It is, after all, the place for high-thrills roller coasters and adrenaline junkies. But I gave in and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of rides they had for my little ones!

Bugs Bunny World had more than enough to entertain my guys for hours, plus there were several more rides in the park that they were able to enjoy. Road Runner, in particular, now has permanent tiny tushy indents from my kids repeated rides, and the Roaring Rapids was a splashy hit on the hot day.

The unexpected hour plus of peace while both my kids played at the Looney Tunes lodge was worth the price of admission alone. So don’t be afraid to make the trip!

Visit their website for height requirements and park info.

End of Summer Food Drive for the SCV Food Pantry

So, it’s always a good idea to help others in need, right? But are your kids getting that message? Help them learn compassion while helping those needing food supplies by participating in the End of Summer Food Drive for the SCV Food Pantry.

It’s happening through August 29th (although donations are welcome year round at the pantry), and they have an urgent need for canned meat, tuna, peanut butter, shampoo, and diapers sizes 4 and 5. You can drop them off at City Hall, Santa Clarita Sports Complex, Transit Maintenance Facility, Central Park, City’s Corporate Yard, Valencia Library, Old Town Newhall Library, and Canyon Country Library, and more info is available here.

It’s a great way to teach your kids how to give back to their community.
