Family Promise Gearing Up For Fifth Annual Box City Event

A record turnout is expected at Saturday’s fifth annual Box City event, hosted by the nonprofit Family Promise of the Santa Clarita Valley, event officials announced Wednesday.

In an effort to raise awareness about the issue of family homelessness in the Santa Clarita Valley, residents will spend the night in a cardboard box at Bridgeport Park.Family Promise Gearing Up For Fifth Annual Box City Event

“Box City allows all of us to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this valley and understand how we can help those who are encountering difficult times,” said Laurie Ender, president of the Family Promise board of directors. “Many are surprised to find out just how many homeless families there are in the Santa Clarita Valley.”

Participants are being asked to set a goal of raising $75 in pledges and contributions. The participant who raises the most money will be named “mayor” of Box City and is set to be presented with the “key” to Box City by Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste.

“We are excited for this year’s event, which we expect to have a record turnout,” Ender said.

Community youth performance group RockNacappella is scheduled to perform, and the event will also feature music, entertainment, activities, raffle prizes and awards.

Family Promise has been offering shelter, meals and support services to families without homes since 2011.

“Family Promise is able to provide a safe place to stay, food, counseling and, most importantly, hope,” Ender said.
