“We already have one project already installed that is capable of producing one megawatt of power. That project was completed three years ago,” said Jeff Ford, CLWA principal water resources manager. “We are putting in a second, larger one that will generate 3.5 megawatts and it should start operating early next month.”

CLWA officials are working with SunPower to construct the 20 acres of energy-savers.
“The generating plant is owned by SunPower who is selling the electricity at a reduced rate that we would normally have to pay Southern California Edison,” Ford said. “The rates would not increase as quickly which would be a benefit to ratepayers. Utility costs stay lower for retailers and hopefully, the cost savings are passed on to the customers.”

The CLWA officials plan to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new solar panels in late October, Ford said. They have not decided on a specific date yet.

“The solar panels generate pollution -free energy,” Ford said. “The two plants combined would offset one-third of electrical demand by the CLWA and Santa Clarita Water Division, it would offset energy otherwise generated by fossil fuels and now we have a pollution-free source for it.”
