Rose Parade Welcomes Eight Santa Clarita High School Band Students

During the 125th annual Rose Parade on Wednesday, eight Santa Clarita Valley high school students got the rare opportunity of participating in the parade’s honor band.

Brian Kuhn, 17, became the first Saugus High student in the school’s history to play the herald trumpet at the parade two years in a row.

“It was really incredible, being a herald is one of the best musical experiences I have ever had and I was really happy that I was fortunate enough to do it twice,” Kuhn said.

The herald trumpet is a special type of elongated trumpet often used in ceremonial situations. Kuhn estimated there were around 80 trumpet auditions, 33 were selected to perform in the parade’s band and 9 in the herald. Herald performers preceded the Rose Queen, and performed at both an early morning ceremony then with the entire parade band band later on.

Five of the students chosen to perform attend Saugus High and included, Evan Hildebrand - senior, Samuel Tazartes - senior, Joseph Youngbauer - senior, and Hunter Seyforth - junior. The others included Justin Casillas - junior at Canyon High, Emma Lee - junior at West Ranch High, and Kelly Freet - junior at Hart High.
