The goal of the district-wide event is to stimulate an interest in physical activity and competition among special needs students, as well as reward those who achieve, event officials said.

Running and field events include a relay, 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, running long jump, high jump, shot put and softball throw contests, according to the news release.

Activities will take place simultaneously across the field as students compete for ribbons.

“It’s a great opportunity for special needs students to engage in fun and competitive activities, earn medals and have some healthy exercise, as well as fun competition, with their peers from other schools,” said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for Hart School District.

Sponsored by the Adapted Physical Education Department and their partner, the Special Needs Olympics, this year’s games are hosted by Valencia High School’s track team, who have helped with equipment as well as provided more than 40 volunteers to assist in the production of the games, event officials said. “This event would not be successful without the teachers, volunteers and parents who are so generously donating their time to this program,” Miller said. “We appreciate their support.”

Students scheduled to compete are from La Mesa Junior High, Rio Norte Junior High, Canyon High, Golden Valley High, Valencia High, Hart High and Trinity Classical Academy, according to the news release.

The Hart Games are scheduled to take place at Valencia High School’s stadium field from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
