Rob Challinor has been with the William S. Hart Union High School District for the last five years. He was the superintendent in the Muroc District for four years prior to that.
“Working as superintendent in the Hart district has been a dream job," he said in a news release announcing his retirement. "The district staff are incredibly talented and focused on student achievement both in the classroom and athletics and performing arts, the community is very supportive is dedicated to serving the needs of our young people.”
A statement from Challinor expressed a desire to spend more time with family, travel and play more golf.
“After 38 years of answering the bell at 5 or 5:30 a.m. and being on call 24-7 for the past 30 years, it’s time to relax.”
While the district has struggled with the opening of Castaic High, which recently had its opening date pushed back another year, Hart board member Joe Messina praised Challinor's presence in the community when reached for comment Wednesday night.
While serving as superintendent, Challinor also served on the Governing Board of the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club, the SCVTV Board of Directors and the city of Santa Clarita Redevelopment Oversight Committee.
Challinor was a "consensus builder" in the Santa Clarita Valley, Messina said, although he acknowledged the move came at an important time for the district.
The Hart district has big plans for change on the horizon elsewhere.
The institution of the Common Core Standards Initiative and a new electoral system promise to bring change, as well.
The Governing Board was reportedly informed at Wednesday night's board meeting, according to officials.
Challinor took over leadership of the Muroc district, with 2,050 students, in October 2006.
He came to that position from Hesperia Unified School District which is similar in size to the Hart District, where he started as a junior high school principal in 1991, was promoted to high school principal in 1994 and served as assistant superintendent from 2000 until moving to the Muroc district in 2006.
He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Redlands, a master's in Education and an administrative service credential from Cal State San Bernardino. He has had experience opening a large comprehensive high school and, as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, reorganized his division to meet the demands of statewide accountability and No Child Left Behind.
