Oak Hills Elementary Second Graders To Perform American History Play

Each year, Oak Hills Elementary second grade students put on a play for parents that incorporates what they're learning in class.

Second graders at Oak Hills Elementary School will perform a play about “Great Americans of the 20th Century” for their parents on Friday.

Oak Hills Elementary SchoolThe half-hour play incorporates what the students are learning in social studies and helps them build confidence in public speaking.

Designed like a news show, the play introduces the audience to different significant figures in American history.

“One of our second grade standards is to learn about heroes in the past, so the play is all about American historical people in the 20th century,” said Second Grade Teacher Holly Rogers.

Students will play the parts of people such as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers, Babe Ruth, Ernest Hemingway and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The play gives the second graders a chance to speak in front of different grade levels and in front of their parents, instead of just their peers.

It’s one step up from “The Wizard of Oz” play that most Newhall School District first graders participate in, Rogers said.

It’s also an opportunity for the students to get exposure to fine arts.

“Not all the kids have the opportunity for the theatre arts outside of school,” Rogers said.

The play is a parents and family-only event. It is not open to the public, but for more information about Oak Hills School and its programs, click here or call 661-291-4100.
