COC Hosting Second TEDx Seminar Conference In April

The TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons conference returns to COC on April 19, with this year’s theme focusing on perspectives, school officials announced Wednesday.

An independently organized event licensed by the nonprofit organization TED, or Technology, Entertainment, Design, the conference features speakers offering their perspectives on a wide range of topics, including biology, art, technology, recycling, design and women in corporate culture, according to a news release by College of the Canyons.  Dr. Charles Chase

“The theme is perspectives because the speakers will either provide a new insight on a familiar topic or combined perspectives on seemingly unrelated subjects, such as biology and art,” said Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine, COC professor and TEDx faculty advisor.

Conference activities include presentations by renowned speakers, a performance by the American Tribal Style Belly Dance and tribal drum troupe, “Twisted Gypsy,” as well as opportunities to view acclaimed TED Talks videos of past conference speakers, event officials said.

Dr. Charles Chase, manager of the Revolutionary Technology Programs organization for Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, is scheduled to speak on the topic of revolutionary technology. Dr. Annette Craven, management professor at the University of the Incarnate World, Frank Oviedo, assistant city manager for the city of Santa Clarita and Jane Skeeter, founder and CEO of UltraGlas, Inc. are also scheduled to speak, along with several COC professors as well.

Jane SkeeterSpeakers, performers and demonstrations are set to follow TED’s 18-minute presentation format, according to the news release.

“Last year’s conference was one of the most exhilarating conferences I have ever helped organize because students were the driving force behind the ideas and we were able to reach many segments of the community,” Cheng-Levine said. “We materialized what TEDx conferences hope to accomplish– bring together the community to share stories and ideas that are inspiring and intellectually stimulating.”

The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 19 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center, located at the college’s Valencia campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

Admission is $20 for students and $50 for non-students, and tickets go on sale Thursday. Students can purchase tickets through COC’s Associated Student Government with a valid student identification card.
