Editorial: KHTS Joins Wilk In Asking For More Time On Chloride Issue

Santa Clarita is facing a major crisis because the chloride level in our waste water is above admissible standards. Most Santa Clarita residents and business owners aren’t aware of the financial implications that will cripple our Valley. KHTS is joining our California State Assemblyman, Scott Wilk and many other community leaders to ask the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for more time on its Oct. 31 chloride deadline to comment on the recently released environmental report and seek a workable solution. This is a wise decision.

So far, our city has already received a whopping $225,000 fine for non-compliance. Money we have to pay that could be much better used for more productive projects.

The issue is complicated because we are at odds with Ventura farmers who claim our chloride levels are damaging their avocado and strawberry crops, despite very questionable scientific evidence to support their claim. We urge our city to continue to put a full court press in fighting the chloride battle and find solutions that won’t have as dire a financial impact on all its residents and businesses.

We applaud Wilk for taking the lead and pushing to find an effective solution. Wilk has teamed with his counterpart, State Assemblyman Steve Fox, D-Palmdale. Together, they have organized a town hall meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 15 from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at the Santa Clarita Activity Center (just above the Aquatic Center) on Centre Pointe Parkway. We urge you to attend.

KHTS encourages you to reach out to Assemblyman Wilk to applaud his efforts to extend our deadline. Make sure you attend his Town Hall Meeting so you may learn more.

We are also aware of a number of Santa Clarita residents who are still using in-home salt water conditioners. It is no longer legal and is adding to our problem. If you know one of your neighbors that hasn’t complied tell them they are hurting all of us. If they still don’t make the switch, let us know and we’ll add to the pressure.
