Cal Arts’ Online Arts Magazine Presents "Summer Issues Cooperative"

East of Borneo, California Institute of the Arts’ contemporary arts and history online magazine publication, presents "Summer Issues Cooperative" from June 29 - July 13 at Greene Exhibitions in Culver City.

 "Summer Issues Cooperative" is a two week exhibition that will feature the mass and gratuitous distribution of contemporary and archival art magazines at newsstands within Greene Exhibitions from local and international publishers.

Members of the public will be able to trade their own art magazines and take home the distributed magazines from the international and local publishers free of charge. 

 “This is a great opportunity to give a sense of to exposure to art publishers out there and for art publishers to reach out new audiences. We have over 600 print pieces that have been contributed by different international and local publishers,” said Stacey Allan, curator for the Summer Issues Cooperative and executive / co-founder of East of Borneo. 

 Contributing publishers to this event range from non-profit proprieties from Los Angeles, New York, London, and Vancouver such as: 2nd Cannons, Afterall, Black Clock, BOMB, The Brooklyn Rail, Cabinet, Concord, East of Borneo, Esopus, Fillip, Insert Blanc Press, Llano del Rio, Los Angeles Review of Books, Material, Native Strategies, Night Papers, Paper Monument, Pep Talk, Public Fiction, Triple Canopy, X-TRA,and others to be confirmed.

 The opening reception will be held on June 29 at 6 p.m. and the exhibit will be held until July 13. On July 13 from noon to 5 p.m., there will additionally be a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon and barbeque to fill in the gaps on wikipedia where artists are unrepresented. 

 “The Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will specifically focus on the  Los Angeles art subjects that do not have representation online on Wikipedia such as local artist Noah Purifoy and the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art,” said Stacey Allan, curator for the Summer Issues Cooperative and executive / co-founder of East of Borneo.

 “We will be taking suggestions from readers of our online magazine as to who they want represented online via Wikipedia. We will then edit wikipedia so that we recognize these artists and subjects for their distinguished contributions to Los Angeles cultural history,” according to her statement.

 Greene Exhibitions is situated at 2654 La Cienega Avenue in Los Angeles. Gallery Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
