‘Drugs Are Deadly’ Workshop To Address Dangers To Teens And Families

One of the best defenses against drugs is education. To help youth and parents understand important drug-related issues, the city of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Juvenile Intervention Team are holding an interactive awareness workshop, “Drugs are Deadly” on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Canyon Country Community Center on Flying Tiger Drive.

The workshop will address how drugs affect youth in Santa Clarita, how easy it is to hide drugs in the home using common household items and how to provide resources to youth and families who are struggling with this issue.

“The City is committed to the continued education of parents and teens about drugs, their effects and ways to prevent drug abuse within their families,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.

Detective William Velek of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will also talk about the dangers of heroin, methamphetamine, ecstasy, prescription pills and the common household items youth are using to hide such drugs.

Velek said that his talk will mostly be directed at parents–how they can recognize the signs of drug abuse in their kids.

He said that hiding places for drugs could include a lint brush, trophy, tennis ball or “stash” cans designed to look like soda cans, usually anything with a hollow spot in it.

The “Drugs are Deadly” workshop is led by the Sheriff’s Department’s J-Team, a specialized unit created to combat drug related issues. This team of investigators, detectives and sergeants monitors and tracks juvenile drug-related cases, targets drug suppliers in the community and educates youth about the dangers associated with drug use to improve the quality of life for juveniles in Santa Clarita.
