Signature-gatherer arrested on an assault charge outside of a Walmart in Canyon CountryThe signature-gatherer was arrested on a battery charge around 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Kimberly Shanklin, 45, of Belleview, Ill., reportedly was arrested but is believed to have been “cited out,” officials said. She was not in custody Saturday evening.

The name of the suspect was not released by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials. Sheriff’s Station officials would not release any details regarding the nature of the assault.

“(The) victim said that the suspect punched her in the hand,” Cambra wrote in an email.

The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office, Cambra said, who will then decide whether to file charges. There is an anticipated court date of June 19.

Petitioners are legally allowed to solicit signatures outside of private businesses such as Walmart, but cannot engage in unlawful behavior, Rush said.

“The petition-gatherers have the right to be there, even though its private property,” Rush said. “However, they can’t interrupt customers and be offensive. They have the right to petition as long as they are doing so in a peaceful manner.“

The referendum would either “forces the city to repeal the billboard deal or forces the city to put it on a ballot for the voters to decide,” according to Patti Sulpizio, a Santa Clarita resident who’s helping in the effort to fight the billboard proposal. “The CIty Council will have to vote on what option to take (if the referendum gathers the needed signatures).”

Rush added that there were several other arguments at different Walmart locations between petition-gatherers and those who opposed the petition; however, no further arrests were made.

“I’ve talked to a couple of different parties, and explained to them that everyone has the right to be there,” Rush said, “and we are hoping that we won’t have any further incidents.”
