The city and unincorporated areas of the Santa Clarita Valley have seen an overall downward trend in crime since 2009, though statistics between 2013 and 2014 are harder to generalize.

The Sheriff’s Department report only looks at Part 1 crimes, which include homicide, rape, assault, burglary, arson and grand theft, among others.

Since 2013, burglary and larceny theft have gone down by almost 40 percent in Santa Clarita, and arson has decreased by more than 82 percent, for 35 percent decrease across all Part 1 crimes.

In the unincorporated areas, grand theft auto has gone down the most since 2013, by almost 43 percent.

But, forcible rape and larceny theft has gone up by about 36 percent and 40 percent, respectively, coming to a 24 percent increase across all Part 1 crimes in the unincorporated SCV.

For the entire SCV, both the city and surrounding communities, Part 1 crimes have gone down by 23 percent.

“Santa Clarita is consistently ranked among the safest cities in America, and this is due in part to the strong partnership among the city of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department and the community,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “Together, the City and Sheriff’s Department take a personalized approach to crime prevention, from free informative community workshops, to the highly effective Crime Prevention Unit, which allocates specialized teams and resources to targeted ‘zones’ in our city.”
