Joseph Taylor, 24, of Santa Clarita, pleaded not guilty earlier this month after he was arrested at 3:30 a.m. April 14 outside of the Jack in the Box at the 18500 block of Via Princessa, near Jason Drive, in Canyon Country.Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station deputies arrested a Santa Clarita man at this Jack in the Box in Canyon Country (Photo courtesy of Google Maps)

“(Taylor) was charged with misdemeanor second degree burglary, the victim being Jack in the Box; petty theft, with the victim being Jack in the Box; and vandalism causing over $400 in damage,” said Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Deputies responded to a reported burglary at the fast food restaurant and did not immediately observe a disturbance.

Upon arrival, a break-in attempt was not readily apparent; however, as deputies walked around to the south side of the store, they heard a noise and it appeared a startled Taylor began to quickly walk away from the deputies toward the south side of the store, toward Via Princessa, according to officials.

After deputies ordered Taylor to stop so they could question him, he refused and a foot pursuit ensued. After Taylor took off, he threw away a camouflage-colored backpack deputies later recovered, according to a Sheriff’s Station report.

After detaining Taylor, who claimed he was a sovereign citizen, deputies conducted a more thorough investigation of the restaurant.

They also noticed the restaurant’s surveillance equipment was damaged.Deputies reported the drive-thru window had been smashed by a large rock, the fryer was turned on at the restaurant — which had been closed for several hours — and six tacos were being cooked.

When deputies searched the contents of the bag Taylor threw away, they found chocolate cakes, Southwestern chicken salads, cheesecakes and waffles.

Taylor has several pending cases, according to Sheriff’s Department arrest records. He’s due back in court May 30 on an unrelated case.

Taylor is scheduled to be back in court for the vandalism and theft charges June 6, Santiago said.
