“A jogger was heading westbound, near Golden Valley Road and Samantha Court, and she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Golden Valley Road,” said Officer John Lutz of the California Highway Patrol.

A boy was driving a 1989 Toyota Celica. The victim is reportedly a Saugus High student.

A Tweet sent out by by Saugus High ASB Twitter account sent condolences to the family and friends of Jennifer Stift.

Saugus High Principal Bill Bolde released a statement to the community Tuesday, noting there would be counseling services available to students to help them cope with the loss.

"Jennifer was a popular student and well-liked by many here at Saugus," read the statement from Bolde. "She was a member of our theater class and the Saugus swim team."

Stift was a Saugus High senior.

Speed is not suspected as a factor in the crash, according to Sgt. Reyes of the California Highway Patrol, although all aspects of the crash are being investigated.

"We want all parents to know that we are here to help. We are here to support. We also call on all parents to engage in a conversation on the home front about today’s events," Bolde continued. "Talk to your kids about their thoughts and feelings. Allow them to release any emotions that may be harbored deep within."

A statement from the principal said the driver "allegedly lost control" of his vehicle.

No arrests have been made in the incident at this time.

Both the victim and the driver were 17 years old, according to CHP officials.

The name of the driver was not released.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, Lutz said, although he added that the

investigation was ongoing.
