Deputies remind local residents of the dangers and consequences of illegal fireworks for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

With the 4th of July quickly approaching it is important for you to know Santa Clarita Valley‘s laws on illegal fireworks.

Per Santa Clarita Municipal Code Section 9.60.030 it is unlawful for any person to handle, give away, sell, offer for sale, solicit the sale of, manufacture, possess, purchase, use, ignite, explode, fire, or otherwise discharge any fireworks within the city of Santa Clarita or to aid or abet any of the above with respect to fireworks as defined.

The dry winter and high temperatures create an extreme fire danger.

Deputies will be out between now and July 4 strongly enforcing this code with the first offence being a fine of $500 and the second offence being $1000.

As an alternative to using illegal fireworks enjoy the fireworks celebration at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies swept through the wash of the Santa Clara River recently as part of an effort to police areas frequented by the Santa Clarita Valley’s homeless population.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies believe a movie-prop vest stolen from a Valencia garage, which prompted a bomb scare that shut down Kohl’s for hours, is also evidence in a burglary investigation.

Two DUI /Driver’s License Checkpoints were set up Friday by deputies from the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station, with the first on westbound Newhall Avenue and Carl Court and the second on eastbound Magic Mountain Parkway at Avignon Drive.

An attempted murder charge was dismissed Tuesday against a Canyon Country woman who was arrested in connection with a stabbing near the Canyon Crest apartment complex.

Santa Clarita officials are working to clean up a property known as The Greens in Valencia, which they consider a “public nuisance,” an official with the City Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies arrested a Santa Clarita man Wednesday night after responding to reports of a commercial burglary and a BB gun assault.

Crime Reports

Deputies have released the crime reports for June 16-22 in Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, Stevenson Ranch and Valencia. KHTS publishes crime reports in alphabetical order by community as they are made available.

Canyon Country East, Zone 8

A residential burglary occurred near the 18000 block of River Circle. The victim left his garage door during night time hours. When he came out to his garage in the morning he saw that stereo equipment was stolen from his garage.

A grand theft auto occurred at the intersection of River Circle/ Nugget Drive. The victims 1999 Honda Civic was stolen from the intersection. The vehicle was later recovered in San Fernando.

There have been several petty thefts occurring at nail and hair salons near Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road. In these incidents the victims are employees of these businesses.

They leave their purses unattended during their shifts. They later realize that their purses have been stolen. Santa Clarita Station detectives are currently investigating these thefts.

Canyon Country West, Zone 7

Newhall, Zone 6

A look back at the crimes reported in the Newhall area last week.

On Wednesday the 18th, a theft occurred in the 24600 block of Wiley Canyon. A gym bag, towel, and some pills were stolen.

On Friday the 20th between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 21300 block of Trumpet Drive. A door was pried open and property was stolen from inside the residence.

A domestic assault occurred on Monday the 16th at 1:30 a.m. on Apple Street South of Lyons Avenue. The 45 year old male suspect punched the victim and fled.

A commercial burglary occurred in the 23500 block of Lyons Avenue sometime between Friday the 13th and Monday the 16th. A lock was broke off and a window was forced open.

On Friday the 20th deputies responded to a theft call at Lyons Avenue and Wiley Canyon. After conducting an investigation the deputies located the suspect who had fled. The 24 year old male suspect was positively identified by the victim and was subsequently arrested for strong arm robbery.

Remember to lock your doors and windows, don’t leave valuables in plain view, be aware of your surroundings, and report suspicious behavior.

Saugus, Zone 4 Update

There was a residential burglary in the 21600 block of Parvin Drive on June 15th. The victim discovered that multiple items had been stolen out of his open garage overnight. The same night there was also a vehicle burglary reported on Parvin Drive where miscellaneous items were taken from the victim’s vehicle. Detectives are looking into both incidents.

A second residential burglary was reported in the 20500 block of Alaminos Drive between June 16th and June 18th. The victim reported that someone stole jewelry from the location. Nothing else was taken and there were no signs of forced entry. Detectives are following up on the case.

A commercial burglary to an elementary school in the 2900 block of Bernardo Way was reported between the late night hours of June 16th into the early morning hours of June 17th. An employee of the school found two windows broken leading into one of the classrooms. It was determined that nothing was taken in the burglary.

We had a vehicle burglary in the 21000 block of Cedar Falls Drive on June 22nd. The victim discovered her RV had been broken into overnight, however, nothing was taken.

There were multiple arrests made over the past week in the Saugus area. The arrests include burglary, possession of narcotics, DUI, and outstanding warrants.

Stevenson Ranch / Westridge, Zone 3

Last week, the following Part 1 crime occurred in Zone 3 Stevenson Ranch:

A residential burglary occurred near the 26000 block of Potter Place. An unknown suspect took several pieces of jewelry and U.S. Currency from the location.

A grand theft occurred near the 25300 block of The Old Road. An unknown suspect took several parts off the victim’s vehicle that was parked in the garage of the location.

There were four incidents of shoplifting in Zone 3 last week. The incidents resulted in five arrests. Charges included petty theft, burglary, possession of a controlled substance/sales and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 2007 Hyundai Elantra and trailer were taken near the 25100 block of The Old Road. The vehicle was parked in a business parking lot. The vehicle was recovered the following day in the LAPD Mission Division area.

A 1994 Honda Civic was taken near the 24900 block of Constitution Avenue. The vehicle was parked on the street, in front of the location.

A 2006 Nissan Altima was taken near the 26100 block of Magic Mountain Parkway. The vehicle was parked in a large parking lot.

Valencia, Zone 5

During the past week, the criminal incidents reported in Valencia included, residential burglaries, vehicle burglary, grand theft auto and shoplifting from local businesses.

Two residential burglaries occurred between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. One occurred on the 24500 block of Farrow Drive. Entry and exit was made by smashing a rear door of the location with a rock. Items stolen were jewelry from the master bedroom. A second residential burglary occurred on 24200 block of Vista Ridge Drive. Entry and exit was made by smashing the rear kitchen door with a brick. Items stolen were clothing and perfume located in a bedroom.

A vehicle burglary occurred at the 225900 block of Westinghouse Place between the hours of 11:30 pm to 7:00 am. The vehicle was parked in a parking lot. Entry/exit was made by smashing the front passenger window with an unknown object. Items stolen were groceries from the passenger front seat. No suspect or witness was located.

A grand theft of a vehicle occurred on the 28100 block of Smyth Drive between the hours of 10:00 pm to 10:00 am. The vehicle, a 1998 Honda/Civic, was parked on a public street. Please do not become a victim! Use caution and be cognizant of your surroundings. Do not leave items visible in your vehicle. Take all personal belongings with you when you exit your vehicle or secure items in locked trunks. Do not leave items on floorboards, underneath vehicle seats or cover them with clothing apparel or blankets. Thieves know this technique.

Remember to roll up all windows and lock doors before walking away from your vehicle. Keep the serial numbers of electronic items, such as cell phones, lap tops, IPads, on file in the event that it is stolen to aid its recovery.
