Laura Purviance, 24, has been in custody since February, when she was arrested after her mother, Caroline Purviance, was murdered.

Laura Purviance, who was arrested Feb. 22 by Oregon State Troopers at a rest stop near Medford, Ore., appeared in a Van Nuys courtroom for a preliminary hearing Thursday, but her case was continued until Jan. 16.

Caroline Purviance, 61, of Woodland Hills, who was a special education teaching assistant for the William S. Hart Union High School District, was fatally shot in her home Feb. 13.

Detective David Peteque of the Los Angeles Police Department is in charge of the investigation.

Laura Purviance allegedly went to her mother’s house, shot her in the head and then “just started driving,” he said.

Caroline Purviance worked for the Hart district from March 1999 to January 2004. She was hired at Valencia High School as an instructional assistant.

She also worked at Saugus and Canyon high schools in the same capacity during her time with the district.

Laura Purviance attended Saugus High for a little over a year before transferring out of the district.

Caroline Purviance’s body was discovered in the 5600 block of Mason Avenue, where the elder Purviance lived, on Feb. 13.

She is being held on $2 million bail.

If convicted, she faces up to life in prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Ratinoff.
