Joseph Munoz, 19, of Canyon Country, was accused of going into the Walmart on Carl Boyer Drive with the intent to steal.

“He was found guilty on two counts -- petty theft and second degree commercial burglary,” said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. “Both (charges) are misdemeanors, and in both, the victim is Walmart.”

Munoz was released Monday from the municipal court’s lockup after serving three days in the court’s jail.

He was immediately remanded into custody after the verdict.

Munoz was cited and released shortly after the theft, according to Sheriff’s Department officials, who caught Munoz with about $100 worth of candy, and $133 worth of men’s socks and underwear.

He was also ordered to complete 10 days of Caltrans labor, a $150 penalty and to pay a public defender fee of $1,250.

He was also given three years of summary probation, during which he is ordered to stay away from Walmart.

The case was investigated by the COBRA unit of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, which handles most juvenile- and gang-related crime at the station.

The deputy district attorney in charge of the case’s prosecution declined to comment on the terms offered to the teen before trial.

The maximum statutory penalty for petty theft is a fine not exceeding $1,000, or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or both.
