UPDATE: April 7-13 Crime Reports Released For The Santa Clarita Valley

The crime reports are in for April 7 through April 13 in the Santa Clarita Valley. Know what’s happening in your community.

UPDATES WITH CANYON COUNTRY, CASTAIC AND VALENCIA CRIME REPORTS, AND THIS WEEK’S CRIME HIGHLIGHTS.

This week’s top crime stories mostly involved court cases with Santa Clarita Valley ties. The charges include rape, murder, arson and bank robbery.

Santa Clarita Crime

Arthur Lindsey, 73, of Acton, is a registered sex offender who’s also a convicted murderer. He is due back in court in May for a follow-up hearing in a case where he is accused of drugging and raping a Santa Clarita Valley woman.

Ghisan Omar Monsour, 28, of Oakland, died in a two-car collision on northbound Interstate 5 in Lebec near Smokey Bear Road, when his car rear-ended a big rig.

Deputies are looking for a person of interest in connection with a case of identity theft. A Santa Clarita man had a debit card, checks and other financial information taken from his mailbox. The suspect reportedly forged and deposited checks into his bank account using an ATM and the victim’s stolen debit card.

Two cases with SCV connections had hearing on Tuesday.

Juan Mejia, 31, of Canyon Country, who is accused of killing his father in Santa Clarita’s only murder in 2013, had a hearing setting.

Suzette L. Crockett, 46, of Stevenson Ranch, who is accused of killing Johnny Sanchez in an alleged DUI crash, is due back in court April 28 for the setting of a preliminary hearing in her case

The child molestation charge was dropped against Legacy teacher Carl Astrera was dropped Wednesday. Legacy parents and students came out to the courthouse in a show of support for Astrera.  

Kristi Lynn Henderson, 49, of Castaic, who is accused of setting her own home on fire New Year’s Day, had a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 11.

Demarie Rashad Mackey, 24, of Palmdale, was sentenced to 70 years to life in prison this week, for robbing the Bank of America in Newhall in March 2013.

The April 7-13 crime reports for the Santa Clarita Valley have been released by Sheriff’s Station deputies. KHTS AM-1220 publishes crime reports in alphabetical order by community as they are made available.

Canyon Country Crime – east

A commercial burglary was reported near the 18000 block of Soledad Canyon Road at a restaurant. In this incident the suspect shattered the front glass window and entered the business. The suspect stole change from the cash register then fled the location. A similar incident was reported at another location on Soledad Canyon Road one hour later. This case is being investigated by Santa Clarita Valley Station detectives.

A residential burglary was reported near the 17000 block of Princess Tree Court. The suspect(s) in this incident stole cabinets that were inside the unfinished house. The cabinets are valued at $4,000.

An assault with a deadly weapon occurred near the 27000 block of Dovehouse Street. In this incident the juvenile suspect assaulted another juvenile boy. The suspect slammed the victims head on to the concrete ground causing bruising and swelling. This case is being investigated by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

Canyon Country Crime – west

This past week in Zone 7, the following Part-1 Crimes occurred:

A residential burglary occurred near the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway. The victim’s front door was pried open. Nothing was taken by the suspect. This incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

A commercial burglary occurred near the 18900 block of Soledad Canyon Road. The suspect forced entry through the rear door and stole cash from the cash register. This incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

A petty theft from an unlocked vehicle occurred near the 19200 block of Sierra Highway. The suspect entered the victim’s vehicle through an unlocked door. While inside the suspect stole the digital face plate to the stereo. This incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

Castaic/Val Verde Crime

The following crimes were reported in Zone 2, Castaic/Val Verde.

Three vehicles parked inside a secured lot on Castaic Road were broken into. Power tools were taken. The suspect gained entry into the yard by cutting the lock to the back fence.

Parks Bureau took a report of a stolen Ford Edge that was parked in the overflow lot at lower Castaic Lake. There was also a petty theft reported from the lower lake by a fisherman who had his Samsung phone taken from his tackle box.    

A homeowner on Sharp Road in Castaic had his home broken into. The neighbor called deputies when he saw a man climbing into the second story window of the residence. Deputies responded and cleared the house and surrounding area but no suspect was found. The homeowner reported nothing was missing.

A burglary was reported on Park Vista in Castaic. Entry to the building was made through a window, and once inside the suspects broke two ceiling tiles and ransacked the contents of the room. The damage was estimated at $25.

A business on Castaic Road reported its back door was pried in an attempt to break in. The door and lock were broken and pry marks were seen around the door frame.

Newhall Crime

A look back at the crimes reported in the Newhall area last week.

A purse was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 25000 block of Highspring Avenue. The vehicle was parked in front of a residence and the theft occurred sometime overnight between Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12.

A residential burglary occurred in the 24600 block of Newhall Avenue between Friday, April 11 at 1 a.m. and Saturday, April 12 at 12 a.m. A television was taken during the burglary.

Used cooking oil was taken from a business in the 24200 block of Main Street sometime between Friday, April 4 and Monday, April 7.

The theft of used cooking oil is occurring nationwide. The oil is stolen to sell to recyclers, who refine it to be used as bio-diesel fuel. The thefts almost always occur late at night or very early in the morning. The thieves can use different types of vehicles, and the theft may only take several minutes. There are legitimate companies who contract with local businesses, but they are clearly marked and conduct business during normal working hours. If you see suspicious activity at local businesses that you believe may be the theft of used cooking oil, please call the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121 and report it.

A domestic violence incident occurred Friday, April 11 at 8:15 a.m. at the victim’s residence in the 25000 block of De Wolfe Road. The 37-year-old male suspect fled the location on foot and is currently being sought by the Sheriff’s Department.

Saugus Crime

The following crimes were reported in the Saugus area over the past week:

There was a commercial burglary in the 22000 block of Soledad Canyon Road on April 9. Three offices at the location were broken into overnight; however, it is unknown what was taken.

A commercial burglary was reported in the 27700 block of Bouquet Canyon Road on April 13. It was discovered that the front window of the business was smashed and money from the register was missing. Detectives are actively working the case.

There was an assault with a deadly weapon reported in the 28000 block of Bouquet Canyon Road on April 8. A store clerk was assaulted by an estranged customer after an argument. Deputies quickly responded to the location and arrested the suspect without incident.

A petty theft occurred in the 27200 block of Grano Avenue on April 6. The victim left his iPad unattended in his front yard for a short period of time. When he returned outside he discovered his iPad was stolen.

There was a petty theft reported in the 21900 block of Centurion Way back on April 1. The victim stated she left her purse unattended while she attended a meeting. When she returned she discovered her driver’s license was missing from her wallet.

There were multiple arrests made over the past week in the Saugus area. The arrests include assault, theft, narcotics, weapons, DUI and disturbing the peace.

Stevenson Ranch/Westridge Crime

Last week, the following Part 1 crimes occurred in Zone 3 Stevenson Ranch:

An incident of domestic violence occurred near the 25500 block of Fountain Glen Court. A female suspect attempted to stab the victim with a butcher knife when an argument escalated. The suspect was arrested by responding deputies. The incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

A vehicle burglary occurred near the 23800 block of The Old Road. An unknown suspect shattered the front passenger window of the victim’s vehicle and took a purse which was left on the front passenger seat.

A petty theft of a bicycle occurred near the 24900 block of Pico Canyon Road. The bicycle and combination lock were taken from a bicycle rack located in front of a local business.

There were three petty theft/burglary shoplifts near the 25400 block of The Old Road resulting in one arrest. In each incident, a suspects concealed items on their person and exited the location, failing to pay for the items.

Valencia Crime

During the past week, the criminal incidents reported in Valencia were arson, vehicle burglaries, theft from unlocked vehicles, grand thefts and numerous shoplifting from various businesses.

An arson occurred on the 23500 block of Valencia Boulevard, in the Santa Clara River Wash between the hours of 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. Miscellaneous clothing and quarter acre of bushes caught on fire. The suspect, a male white adult from the Valencia area, was arrested shortly after. He was in possession of a lighter and admitted to being in the area during the fire. The investigation is currently being handed by the Sheriff’s Department Arson/Explosive Detail.

Two vehicle burglaries occurred in the 24600 block of Town Center Drive and the 23800 block of Mcbean Parkway between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Victims reported the rear passenger windows had been shattered with an unknown object. The victim’s vehicles were parked in a parking structure of an apartment complex and business parking lot. Items stolen were laptop computers which were left on the rear passenger seat of each vehicle. No suspects or witnesses were located regarding this incident.

There were two grand thefts that occurred at the 26300 block of Rockwell Canyon between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. One victim left a book bag containing a wallet and an iPod touch in the bed of his truck unsecured. The other victim left a laptop computer in a desk drawer, unlocked, in a classroom. A third grand theft also occurred on the 24400 block of Magic Mountain Parkway at 11:50 a.m. The victim left his bicycle locked on a bike rack in front of the location. When he returned, the lock had been cut from the bike rack and the bicycle was gone.
