GoFundMe Page Set Up For Family Of Santa Clarita Transit Driver Who Died After Testing Positive For Coronavirus

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of a Santa Clarita Transit driver, who died a few days after testing positive for COVID-19, in an effort to help with his “final expenses.”

Jory “Jay” Bohanan died on March 30 after testing positive for COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, falling ill two days before his death.

A few days later, Cynthia Brown set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to help pay for funeral costs.

“We need help with Jory’s (Jay’s) final expenses,” she wrote on the page. “Thank you for your help.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the page had surpassed its $5,000 goal, raising nearly $5,800 in the week that it has been up.

Bohanan was a driver with MV Transportation, a company that contracts with the City of Santa Clarita to provide transit services for residents.

City officials were notified by MV Transportation on March 31 that three of their drivers who worked on Santa Clarita routes had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Sadly, one of the drivers passed away this morning,” read a statement issued by the City of Santa Clarita on March 31. “The City sends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Bohanan had reportedly worked for MV Transportation for several months before contracting the virus, according to personnel with MV. He is one of at least five bus drivers who drove Santa Clarita routes who have tested positive for the virus as of April 7.

“Those individuals are all on quarantine and under the care of their healthcare providers,” said Jeff Womack, chief marketing officer, in an email Tuesday.

Womack went on to say that MV Transportation would not be announcing new cases going forward in an effort to maintain the privacy of affected individuals.

“We are keeping our employee team and Santa Clarita Transit well aware, but aside from those initial notices, we are not sharing additional information about every new illness or positive employee diagnosis since that could lead to individuals being identified and could cause other spaces to be mistakenly seen as being without risk,” Womack wrote.

While Bohanan was the first person in the Santa Clarita community to die after testing positive for COVID-19, he is not the only one. Officials with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital confirmed Thursday morning that one of their patients who was being treated for the virus had passed away.

As of Thursday afternoon, there are 126 confirmed cases in the city of Santa Clarita, seven in Castaic, 10 in Stevenson Ranch and 12 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Additionally, five cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as of Thursday.

The numbers for the unincorporated portions of Valencia and Saugus, as well as nearby Agua Dulce, have been “suppressed,” meaning there are between one and four confirmed cases for each community, according to public health officials.

This is done to protect patient privacy. Once these locations have five or more confirmed cases, the numbers are expected to be included, according to a public health spokesperson.

There were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the unincorporated portions of Newhall as of Thursday afternoon.
