College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita hosted its first TEDx event last Thursday, giving speakers in various areas of technology, business and education a chance to share their knowledge the topic of connectivity — specifically how connected communities can increase the wellbeing of individuals, and as a result, improve global welfare.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences – the TED Conference on the West Coast each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer – TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos — or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos — sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

Purpose of TEDx College of the Canyons

Speaker Raimone RobertsThe purpose of TEDx College of the Canyons is to reach a new level of human well-being worldwide by challenging everyone to start bringing into existence new approaches and methods in connectivity, allowing for the increase of efficient elaboration and distribution of our information and knowledge. We encourage the promotion of finding new concepts with the goal of seeing growth within the potential of every individual within our local community. Through the power of our understanding of empathy and the limitless nature of technology, greater communication and collaboration can be achieved, furthering the spread of ideas. Within the community we create a new web of connection with the intention of expanding that web beyond our city’s barriers to reach out towards more minds, more people, thereby redefining what it means to be a local community. In our vision for a modernistic technique striving for an interconnected human network, a local community will become worldwide, allowing the opportunity for the understanding of feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of others, assisting in understanding indifference and bridging gaps that keep the human race from unification. This will ultimately help improve the well-being of people across the globe.
