The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center on the college’s Valencia campus.

The Santa Clarita Environmental Consortium’s mission is to promote environmental literacy. They are an initiative of College of the Canyons and works as a private-public partnership.

Events and activities will be available both on campus and in the community to promote awareness about environmental concerns. The goal is to educate teachers, students and residents in the Santa Clarita Valley through interaction and hands-on learning

.

“The health of our environment is our common future,” said Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine, COC instructor and vice chair of the SCEEC advisory board. “The SCEEC was established with a sole purpose to serve the Santa Clarita Valley by helping to foster a better environmental future for all.”

The conference is free and open to the public. There will be presentations from Jerry Buckley, COC assistant superintendent and vice president of instruction and from keynote speaker Geoffrey Chase, dean of undergraduate studies at the San Diego State University and board chair for Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Chase, an expert in issues relative to sustainability in higher education, is widely known for his work at Northern Arizona University, as the director of English Composition.

Some of his work includes recreating the composition curriculum at NAU by highlighting the importance of environmental matters. He was a contributor to the Ponderosa Project, which encouraged faculty to incorporate environmental issues into their classes.

Faculty in more than 175 campuses nationwide and in Canada have used the Ponderosa Project as a model faculty development project since it began.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Dr. Chase’s academic stature and expertise join us for our inaugural event,” Cheng-Levine said. “I encourage anyone interested in the unique relationship between academia and environmental responsibility to attend.”

Chase is also the co-editor of the book, “Sustainability on Campus: Stories and Strategies for Change” from 2004.

Those who attend the keynote portion of the conference will be able to enjoy a light breakfast and also receive a voucher redeemable for a “Bluebird box” (which can be decorated and taken home as part of the SCEEC’s ongoing Western Bluebird Restoration project) or a free sapling provided by the city of Santa Clarita.

Attendees should register in advance due to limited seating during this portion of the conference.

Additional panel presentations and breakout discussions to be held at the conference will focus on topics including:

·     Environmental technology

·     Green architecture and home design

·     Business and sustainability

·     Water conservation

·     Eco-friendly gardening

·     Renewable energy

·     Personal environmental responsibility and common best practices.

Representatives from the Placerita Canyon Nature Center will be showing an interactive green automotive technology display and wildlife preservation demonstration.

There will be several healthy food options available either on display or for sale by vendors and food trucks at the event.
