As the culmination of a multi-year partnership between College of the Canyons biology professors Kelly Burke and Kelly Cude, the gallery is expected to feature micrographs of artful depictions of plants, animals and microbes, as well as a variety of human cells and tissues.
“To me this show is an opportunity for people to change their perspective of the world around them by experiencing the intrinsic beauty and complexity of the microscopic world,” said Cude.
“When people realize that an entire microscopic universe can exist in a single drop of pond water, or that humans are made up of trillions and trillions of independent living cells, they cannot help but be amazed and have a deeper appreciation for life,” according to her statement.
Many of the images come from the college’s biological slide and specimen collection. Others were specifically cultured and prepared, or collected from natural environments.
“‘Life as Art: Images From an Unseen World’ is an opportunity to see a gallery that is very unique. In this production, you will have the opportunity to see the building blocks of life. Unless they have a microscope at hand, most people won’t really have a art gallery experience like this elsewhere,” said Bruce Battle, director of communications at College of the Canyons.
“Life as Art: Images From an Unseen World” is expected to be on display from August 26 through September 26 at the COC Art Gallery.
An artist reception is expected take place in the Art Gallery from 2 to 4 p.m. on September 21 and there will be a flex presentation on Wednesday, August 21st, from 10-11 am.
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.
