Civic Leaders To Tour Local Defense Contractor

U.S. Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon and other civic leaders will be speaking to the press following a jobs tour of Aerowire Technical Service in Lancaster next Friday. The tour is being hosted by the L.A. Jobs Defense Counsel, a coalition of business, labor, education, nonprofit, and civic leaders dedicated to protecting Southern California’s economy from the destructive impacts of defense and nondefense sequestration cuts.

Aerowire Technical Services is a minority woman owned small business that provides contract manufacturing services in the avionics and wire/cable fabrication industry. The tour will run from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Aerowire Technical Services is located at 315 East Ave K-8, Suite 109, in Lancaster.

Members of the public are invited to join the jobs tour and meet with the company’s employees and owners to gain a better understanding of how proposed military sequestration cuts will impact Santa Clarita area communities, industries, businesses, and families.

McKeon, the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has been an outspoken opponent of the mandatory sequestration cuts, which are scheduled to go into effect in early March if congress does not act to prevent them. Half of the proposed cuts would hit the Pentagon budget, impacting defense contractors and other businesses in the military’s supply chain.

Following the tour, leaders from throughout the region will address the issues involving sequestration and the need to protect the nation’s military from crippling budget cuts. Speakers will include McKeon, L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, California StateSenator Steve Knight, and L.A. Jobs Defense Council Co-Chair George Burden. Major General Kenneally, Executive Director, Southwest Defense Alliance, and Bill Allen, CEO & President, Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation will also join the discussion.

The press conference is scheduled for 3:15 – 4:00 p.m. at the Palmdale Boys and Girls Club located at the Hammack Activity Center in Palmdale.
