At its Feb. 26 meeting, the City Council directed staff to look into creating an Old Town Newhall Holiday Decor program that would “create a unique holiday destination and help attract shoppers to Old Town Newhall,” according to Tuesday’s agenda.

Staff recommends that the council award a one-year contract to Mobile Illumination for $95,000.

The vendor would install a 23-foot Christmas tree at the Old Town Newhall Library, in addition to lights covering trees and canopies and two illuminated displays.

Another item on note on the agenda, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant would allot $26,999 for the city from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The money is awarded based on each city’s percentage of the state’s total violent crime.

“JAG 2013 grant funds will be used for overtime that will enable Sheriff’s Department personnel to enhance existing law enforcement and community policing efforts to help reduce crime, address quality-of-life issues, and safeguard public safety in Santa Clarita,” according to the agenda.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies would target crimes such as drug use, vandalism and gang activity through increased enforcement.

Staff recommends that the council accept the grant.

The complete agenda for Tuesday’s meeting is available here.
