Castaic Man Dies After Armed Standoff With Santa Clarita Valley Deputies

A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man Sunday evening, after he had holed himself up with a shotgun in the garage of his home in the 26800 block of Cloverleaf Place in the Sloan Canyon area of Castaic.

The incident began about 6 p.m. Sunday, and detectives Torres and Leslie of the Homicide Bureau for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are still investigating the incident.

Investigators have learned that deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Station responded to the location regarding a "family disturbance" call.

While en route to the location, the call was updated to a "suicidal man with a gun" call. When deputy personnel arrived, they made a tactical approach to the  residence.

It was initially thought to be a hostage situation because the man’s adult daughter was with him in the garage.

Deputies determined that the daughter was not being held against her will. Instead, she refused deputies’ orders to leave the garage.

At some point, the shotgun was lying on the ground and the father and daughter engaged in an altercation involving knives.

The suspect emerged from the garage area holding a rifle.

The suspect refused to follow commands to drop the rifle. He pointed the rifle at the deputies, who in fear for their safety, fired at the suspect.

The suspect’s wife, daughter, and the daughter’s baby were escorted to safety.

The suspect was transported by stretcher to an American Medical Response ambulance. His lower chest area was bandaged.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

At least nine shell casings could be seen on the ground at the deputies’ position, and a sheriff’s vehicle that was used to block them had a flat tire.

Lt. Tom Bryski, the watch commander at the time, was on scene.

He said he was not authorized to speak to reporters because the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau would be handling the incident.

The Homicide Bureau handles officer-involved shootings.

No deputies were injured. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Detectives with the Homicide Bureau have not released the name of the suspect or the deputy, or his medical condition.
