Freeman was diagnosed with ocular melanoma February 2007, according to a Facebook page created to support him, called “Freeman Family Fight.”

On April 18, Freeman was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma to the liver.

“We are currently seeking the advice of the best in the country to get him the care that he needs to survive this rare cancer,” the site states.

When local school officials heard about the illness, they wanted to support him however they could, said Principal Mike Kuhlman.

“When we got news of his diagnosis, we just wanted to find some way for our two schools to embrace the family and support them through this difficult time,” Kuhlman said.

“He is just a terrific (school resource officer), and just a fantastic human being,” Kuhlman said. “All of us here appreciate working with him and love him as a guy.”

Several bands from the L.A. area will also be performing, said Mike Motherspaw, ASB director for Canyon High School.

Saugus ASB also is helping with food and refreshments, and there will also be a silent auction near the food trucks.

Donations for the auction are still be accepted. If anyone’s interested they may contact Motherspaw at 661-714-4749 or email at mmotherspaw@hartdistrict.org

The $2 event will offer games and food trucks starting at 6 p.m., and then at 8 p.m. there will be a powder puff football game, Kuhlman said.

“All the proceeds for the event will go to the Freeman family,” Kuhlman said. “It’ll be $2 entry, and we’ll be encouraging people to donate as they walk in.”
